After a two-year, £20 million refurbishment, St Mellion International Resort, in Cornwall, is now fully re-opened!
Set in 450 acres of stunning Cornish countryside, St Mellion offers a fresh, unexpected alternative to more traditional hotel and resort accommodation in the West Country.
The Resort now offers a brand new, contemporary 4-Star Hotel and 3 very different dining experiences, from a la carte to informal brasserie. An indoor leisure complex with 3 pools, spa facilities (including a wide range of Elemis treatments) and full-scale health club allow you to be as active or relaxed as you choose.
With its two championship golf courses, including the UK's first Jack Nicklaus designed 'Signature Course', one of only three in England; this famous West Country resort has hosted the Benson & Hedges International Open on six occasions and most recently the English Seniors Open, firmly securing St Mellion's position as the finest venue for golf in the South West and as one of Europe's premier resorts for both golf and leisure. St Mellion awaits the return of the European Tour from 2011 where it will play host the English Open.
Ideally positioned to explore the best the County has to offer - the Cornish seaside towns of Polperro and Looe are within a 20 minute drive - St Mellion is under an hour away from the famous North coast surfing beaches, the culinary delights of Padstow, the world famous Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Helligan.
Easily accessible by road - Plymouth is only a 15-minute drive away - regular flights from 11 regional airports making the Resort even more convenient.
The Championship course was laid out by world renowned golf architect Harry Colt in 1924 and officially opened in 1925. At the time of designing Trevose, Colt was already responsible for the design of many other courses, some of which are Augusta, Pine Valley, Sunningdale, Royal Portrush, Muirfield and Wentworth. It was his only work in the South West although it is rumoured that the extreme beauty of the Cornish coastline and its topography enticed him to the area.
The course has four sets of tees, blue (championships), white (club competitions), yellow (mens day) and red (ladies day). Each tee offers a varying amount of difficulty.
As with all of Colts designs the course is in two loops of 9 holes with the front 9 holes hugging the sand dunes and coastline and back 9 forming inland links, however the sea can be seen from every single hole.
As with all links golf the difficulty is with the wind, guaranteeing the golf course plays differently almost every day. The greens are quick all year round and the course guaranteed to be in great condition 365 days a year. The fairways are tightly cut and the rough penal in places, but fair, along with many strategically placed bunkers that are ready to swallow up golf balls. Trevose ensures you use almost every club in your bag and the experience is memorable, hence the number of top amateurs and professionals that choose to play the course and keep returning.
One of the finest links courses in the South West, Perranporth boasts spectacular panoramic views throughout this championship course. With stunning views over the sea and the extensive golden sands below, few courses are better placed than this. So, pause a moment on the 5th and 14th tees and take in the truly spectacular scenery of which you could never tire.
Taking advantage of the natural contours of the landscape means that James Braid, course designer, was successful in creating each hole with its own individual demands and character. Not only this, but the greens which are fast and absolutely true have a reputation for being amongst the best in the South West.
At 6296 yards this exciting par 72 is a challenge for both high and low handicappers. It is a course you will want to return to play time and time again.
